Description
This Apple Upside Down Cake recipe features a moist, fluffy cake topped with tender, caramelized apples. It’s an easy-to-make, comforting dessert perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
- 3 medium-sized Apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
- 1/2 cup Unsalted Butter
- 1 cup Brown Sugar
- 1 1/2 cups All-Purpose Flour
- 1 teaspoon Baking Powder
- 1/2 teaspoon Baking Soda
- 1/2 teaspoon Salt
- 1 cup Granulated Sugar
- 2 large Eggs
- 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
- 1/2 cup Milk
- 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
Instructions
- Prepare the Apples: Peel, core, and slice three medium-sized apples into thin wedges (about ¼-inch thick). Set aside.
- Make the Caramel Base: Melt ½ cup of unsalted butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in 1 cup of packed brown sugar and 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon until bubbly and smooth (about 3-5 minutes). Pour the caramel mixture evenly into a greased 9-inch round cake pan.
- Arrange the Apples: Layer the apple slices over the caramel mixture in the cake pan, covering it entirely.
- Prepare the Cake Batter: In a mixing bowl, whisk together 1 ½ cups of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, ½ teaspoon of baking soda, and ½ teaspoon of salt. In another bowl, cream together 1 cup of granulated sugar and 2 large eggs until light and fluffy. Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract and ½ cup of milk, combine well, then gently fold in the dry ingredients until just mixed.
- Combine and Bake: Pour the cake batter evenly over the arranged apples in the cake pan. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Cool and Serve: Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Carefully invert the pan onto a serving plate.
Notes
- Use well-greased pans to prevent sticking.
- Avoid overmixing the batter for a lighter texture.
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to a week.
- To freeze, wrap individual slices tightly and store in a freezer-safe bag for up to 3 months.
- Reheat slices in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 10–15 minutes before serving.
