Description
Create a stunning Black Forest Trifle for Christmas, featuring layers of moist chocolate cake, fluffy whipped cream, and sweet cherries. This dessert is easy to prepare, perfect for make-ahead holiday gatherings, and offers a visually appealing centerpiece for your festive feast.
Ingredients
- 1 package moist chocolate cake mix or favorite homemade version
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1 tablespoon sugar (for homemade whipped cream)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for homemade whipped cream)
- 2 cups fresh cherries (or canned cherries or raspberries)
- 1 cup chocolate shavings (optional)
- 1/4 cup Kirsch (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Chocolate Cake: Bake the moist chocolate cake according to package or recipe instructions. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking pan. Let the cake cool completely on a wire rack.
- Whip the Cream: Pour 2 cups of heavy cream into a large mixing bowl. Beat with an electric mixer on medium-high speed until soft peaks form (about 3-5 minutes). Gradually add sugar and vanilla extract to taste, continuing to whip until the cream is thick and holds its shape.
- Assemble the Trifle: Select a large clear trifle dish or individual glass cups. Break or cut the cooled chocolate cake into bite-sized pieces. Layer the bottom of the dish with cake pieces, followed by a layer of whipped cream, and then a layer of fresh cherries. Repeat these layers, finishing with a generous layer of whipped cream on top.
- Chill: Cover the assembled trifle with plastic wrap or a lid and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld and the cream to set.
Notes
- For a stable whipped cream, use powdered sugar.
- Ensure each cake layer is fully covered with cream and cherries for a visually appealing trifle.
- Use fresh cherries and high-quality chocolate for the best taste.
- Allow adequate chilling time for flavors to meld.
- Customize with different fruits or flavors like peppermint.
