- 8 ounces Gruyère cheese (shredded)
- 2.5 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes (peeled and sliced)
- 3 cloves garlic (minced)
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 0.5 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2 pieces dried bay leaves (remember to remove)
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease the baking dish with unsalted butter.
- Grate the Gruyère cheese and set aside.
- Peel and slice the Yukon Gold potatoes into 1/4-inch thick rounds, placing them in a pot.
- Mince the garlic and add it, along with heavy cream, whole milk, salt, pepper, nutmeg, and bay leaves to the pot.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat for about 5 to 7 minutes until fork-tender.
- Layer half of the potatoes in the baking dish and sprinkle half of the cheese on top.
- Repeat with the remaining potatoes and top with cream mixture and remaining cheese.
- Bake for 40 to 45 minutes until golden brown and easily pierced with a knife.
- Garnish with fresh thyme leaves and let cool for 15 minutes before serving.
