These Skull Lava Cakes are a hauntingly delicious twist on red velvet lava cake, perfect for Halloween parties or gothic-themed dinners.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 6 pieces semi-sweet chocolate squares or truffles
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease silicone skull molds.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk sugar, eggs, buttermilk, oil, vanilla, vinegar, and red food coloring.
  4. Combine dry and wet ingredients, mixing until smooth but not overmixed.
  5. Fill each mold halfway, insert a chocolate square or truffle in the center, then cover with more batter until 3/4 full.
  6. Bake for 20–25 minutes, checking with a toothpick near the edge (not center).
  7. Let cool in the mold for 10–15 minutes, then carefully unmold.
  8. Dust with powdered sugar or decorate as desired.
